June:
Speaker: Dr. J.K. Mohana Rao
Topic: Kannada and Telugu Prosody  - similarities and differences
Date: June 10, 2012

Kannada and Telugu are two Indian languages that shared the same or similar script for centuries. Both trace the words in their respective languages to Hala's Gathasaptashati. One can find similarities in the metrical prosodies of the two languages too. Metres like champakamaala and utpalamaala as well as Saardoolavikreeditam and mattebhavikreeditam were used in plenty in the literary works of both the languages. Native metres such as kanda, ragale and akkare are common to both the languages. Whereas native metres like tripadi, shatpadi and saangatya are unique to Kannada, dvipada, seesa and geeti are prominent in Telugu. Yati in Kannada is very rarely followed. But in Telugu poetry, yati in terms of relationship between similar letters is obligatory. This is in fact called vadi. The features that are common to both languages as well as the differences that occur between the two prosodies will be discussed.

Dr. J.K. Mohan Rao
trained as physicist, is a scientist by profession ( structual Biologist). Dr. Rao is very much involved in the studies in the role of symmetry in arts, literature and science. Recipient of the C P Brown Award for research in Telugu Chandassu in 2009 .
